Heading home again...

We got home from the hospital on Monday afternoon.  My Mom arrived around 5 or so and we ate dinner together and enjoyed having our little baby at home.  Charlie was getting acclimated to having her home as well.  He even curled up next to her on the couch and they watched Toy Story together.  Brian and Mindy and the kiddos came by around 7 or so to visit.  The kiddos and Mindy left after a bit and Brian stayed to "play iPhones" with Dave.

Jill was all swaddled up sleeping in my Mom's arms on the couch and we were watching Bachelorette (of course).  Around 9 or so,  my Mom commented to me that Jillian was looking "blue."  I turned to Brian and asked him what he thought.  He took one look at her, swept her out of my Mom's arms, laid her on the ground, unwrapped her and began doing a sternal rub on her chest.  Her face was BLUE.  It took about 30 seconds and she started responding again - kicking, turning pink.  The whole thing lasted about 1-2 minutes.  I can't tell you how grateful I was he was there.  I felt frozen the whole time.

Brian began examining her a little and we called the doctor's nurse line who suggested we take her to the ER.  During this time, she started to go blue twice more.  We responded much quicker those times though.  I was nervous to drive her in the car all the way to the hospital (30 min drive) because she might do it again.  So scared and afraid, I dialed 911.  We had a safe ride in the ambulance to UMC Hospital.  I rode with Jillian in the ambulance and Dave followed us in the car.  My Mom stayed home with Charlie.

When we got to the ER they informed me of the "standard" tests they'd be running.  These included: blood cultures, urine test, chest x-ray, and testing her spinal fluid.  They also did an EKG.  Often blue spells are caused by infection, so they had to check everything.  In the meantime, they would start her on antibiotics anyway and she'd be admitted for 48 hours to complete the antibiotics and to be observed.

To sum things up, we are heading home in about an hour or so.  The results have all come back negative for infection.  Our pediatrician, Dr. Bean, believes it was likely caused by reflux.  However, he also said (as well as many of the other docs we've talked to) that often an answer is never found for why this happens.  We will be following up with Dr.Bean tomorrow in his office.

The worst of it was watching her get poked and prodded so many times.  It was emotionally exhausting and physically draining to return to the hospital with such a worrisome situation.

Anyway, we are heading home again from a different hospital this time with our sweet baby girl - just 3 days old.  We are grateful nothing was found but will be keeping an extra close eye on her over the next while.  Thanks to everyone who has said prayers and offered help.  We are doing well, and we feel blessed that she is still here.  A lot of things were in place that prevented something unspeakable from happening.  A miracle.
